Если коротко - TeX он для ярых математиков. Для технарей не подходит, так как это программистская штуковина. И сам его создатель говорил, что это совего рода игрушка. А распространен он был только ограниченное время - так как некоторые журналы имеют материал, набранный еще давно в нем.
Сейчас эта штуковина не популярна. Только в узких кругах.
