"Slow art: defining a new aesthetic field"
“Civilization is revving itself into a pathologically short attention span ….” remarks musician Brian Eno. “Some sort of balancing corrective … is needed-some mechanism or myth which encourages the long view and the taking of long-term responsibility….” How do Eno’s observations bear on the visual arts? When we have learned to read ever more images in 30-second television commercials, to play amped-up computer games, and take for granted instant gratification on the Internet, what happens when we look, or try to look at art? My presentation will explore various strategies for attending to visual images in a culture of speed and distraction. Sites of slowness include an Orange County, California festival of tableaux vivants, monochromatic painting, videos in which nothing seems to move, James Turrell’s installation in an extinct volcano.
