Postdoctoral Research Fellowships
Two positions as Postdoctoral Research Fellow are vacant at the Department of Educational Research, Faculty of Educational Sciences at the University of Oslo. The positions are part of the NFR funded project “Horizontal change dynamics in higher education – HORIZON”, led by Professors Peter Maassen and Monika Nerland. The successful applicants will be part of the research group “Higher Education: Institutional dynamics and Knowledge cultures” HEIK at the Faculty of Education.
We are searching for highly motivated candidates with a strong interest in higher education as an area of study.
Job Descriptions
Both positions will be affiliated with the HORIZON project that is funded by the educational research programme “UTDANNING 2020” of the Research Council of Norway. The aim of the project is to generate new knowledge about the horizontalization of higher education governance and learning processes in higher education, as well as the ways in which these are interpreted and linked by the institutional leadership.
Position no. 1
The candidate appointed in this position will, together with the project’s senior researchers, carry out analyses and empirical work at three analytical levels – European, national and institutional (see WPs 1 and 2 in project description). Candidates have to document experience with policy studies, preferably in the area of higher education studies. Insight into institutional theory and organisational studies, and knowledge about the specificities of the European and national higher education, research and innovation policies, will be viewed as a strong merit for the position.
Position no. 2
This position is devoted to examining students’ enrolment in expert cultures by analyzing in detail their participation in knowledge practices and learning in the selected educational programs (see WP3 in project description). Candidates should document good qualifications in qualitative and ethnographic research approaches, including approaches to analyze observational and interactional data. Candidates also need to be familiar with socio-material perspectives on learning and knowledge practices, and with recent research developments in this respect. Documented experience from related research is required. To supplement the competencies of the research team, research proposals which include a focus on knowledge practices and learning in the domain of computer engineering are particularly relevant. Candidates need to be able to collect and analyze data in Norwegian educational contexts.
General information

The main purpose of post-doctoral research fellowships is to qualify researchers for work in higher academic positions within their disciplines. It is a pre-requisite that the applicants are able to complete a project and publish articles in internationally recognised academic journals during the fellowship period. The selected candidates are expected to actively participate in academic communities in the Department and in the HEIK research group. The appointed Fellows are expected to contribute to the theoretical and methodological development of the research area.
Both Postdoctoral Fellowships concern a fixed-term position. The appointment is for a period of 3 years. An agreement can be made that up to 10% of the position consists of required duties. The other 90% is dedicated to research. The appointments are made in accordance with current guidelines for Postdoctoral Fellowship appointments. For both Fellows a contract will be entered regarding the appointment period, and the plan for the completion of the research project will be included in the contract. A project description of up to 10 pages must be enclosed with the application. The project description must explain the applicant's project and how this project relates to the project. The project description must document the project's theoretical background, research methods, and any challenges related to research ethics. It must also include a schedule and publication plan for the research. Additionally, the project description must briefly account for the expected costs of the project. The Department may use foreign scholars in the evaluation of the applications. The project description must therefore be written in English.
The application and its appendices must be submitted electronically through EasyCruit. In addition to the project description, the application must contain a CV (complete information on the applicant's education, previous positions, teaching experience and competencies, administrative experience, and any other qualifying activities). The application must also contain transcripts and references, a compete list of publications, up to 5 academic works that the applicant wishes to be considered by the evaluation comittee, and the doctoral dissertation.
Interviews with potential candidates will be part of the selection process.

Qualifications
•The successful candidates must hold a doctoral degree. Applicants who have not yet defended their dissertation must have submitted their dissertation for assessment by the application deadline
•International publications beyond the doctoral dissertation will be given particular emphasis in the evaluation of applications.
•The successful candidates must be able to publish in English
•Active and positive participation in the research group and the Horizon project require the ability to collaborate in a team
•It is an advantage if the applicant understands Norwegian and is able to express him/herself verbally and in writing in a Scandinavian language
•Experience of and interest in cross-disciplinary work will also be advantageous, as the research team will consist of scholars with diverse social science backgrounds
