Summary
The Department of Physics is looking to appoint a post-doctoral associate fellow for 36 months to work on simulations of kinetics of growth of self-assembled monolayers of organic molecules on crystal surfaces.
Details
The post is based in the Molecular and Materials Modelling Group in the Department of Physics to work on understanding driving mechanisms responsible for organisation of a number of organic molecules of different complexity on several crystal surfaces. The idea is to simulate, using a toolbox of methods, from atomistic simulations based on density functional theory (DFT) and/or classical force fields (where appropriate), and “rare events” simulations techniques (such as e.g. temperature accelerated molecular dynamics (MD) and kinetic Monte Carlo (KMC)), nucleation and kinetics of growth of self-assembled structures in order to provide the necessary guidance to experimentalists in forming desired assemblies. This work is going to be conducted in close collaboration with an experimental surface science group in Liverpool led by Prof. Rasmita Raval.
Applicants should have a PhD in solid-state physics or related areas, with significant experience in DFT modeling of surface processes, and in MD simulations based (preferably) on both ab initio and classical Hamiltonians. Experience in code development using Fortran-90 and/or C++ computer languages is essential.
The Material and Molecular Modelling group at KCL has an attractive working environment in the centre of London and excellent computational facilities that will be supplemented by additional computational resources associated with the project. The researcher will also be able to communicate with a wide and diverse computational community within the Thomas Young Centre in London (
http://www.thomasyoungcentre.org), of which the KCL is one of the founding members.
For an informal discussion of the post please contact Prof. Lev Kantorovich (lev.kantorovitch@kcl.ac.uk, tel. (+44) (0)20-78482160).
The closing date for receipt of applications is 1 October 2012.
Salary
The appointment will be made at Grade 6, currently £31,020 - £33,884 per annum, plus £2,323 per annum London Allowance.
Post duration
Fixed term contract for 36 months
