The Faculty of Applied Economics is seeking to fill the following full-time vacancy in the Department of Transport and Regional Economics – Research Centre on Freight and passenger flows

Doctoral student
in the area of port competition

Job description

The position is meant to conduct research on port economics in general and port competitiveness in specific. The aim is to quantify the changed relationships among chain actors, their decision-making framework, and the mutual impacts this has. You should have a good methodological background. Proven research expertise in quantitative research methods and techniques is considered a plus. Your research should allow governments to develop a sustainable port policy.

· You prepare a doctoral thesis in regard to chain perspective on port competiveness;

· You contribute to research in the Department of Transport and Regional Economics – Research Centre on Freight and passenger flows, in the field of ports;

· You enroll in the university's Ph.D. program and obtain a Ph.D. at the end of the Dehousse grant.



Profile and requirements

· You hold a master degree in applied economics and logistics, or equivalent;

· You have relevant knowledge of transport economics and port economics;

· You can submit outstanding academic results;

· Also students in the final year of their degree can apply;

· Your academic qualities comply with the requirements stipulated in the university’s policy ( http://www.ua.ac.be/research );

· You are quality-oriented, conscientious, creative, customer-oriented and cooperative;

· An analytical spirit and a focus on quantification are expected;

· Team player with a sense of initiative and responsibility;

· Excellent verbal and written English communication skills.

· Knowledge of Dutch is an asset – non native speakers are expected to acquire Dutch language skills within the first year.



We offer

· A doctoral scholarship for a period of one year to start with, with the possibility of renewal for a further period after positive evaluation;

· The start date of scholarship will be 1 January 2013;

· A full labour-contract remuneration applies, with a net monthly grant of over 1900 euro;

· A dynamic andstimulating work environment with possibilities for extra training in an international context.
