Job description:

COHERE at The Department of Business and Economics, University of Southern Denmark is advertising a PhD Scholarship in Odense available as of October 1st 2012 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The position is linked to a research project entitled ‘The Hospital of the Future’. The project is concerned with development, adaption, and testing of methods from microeconomics and management science with the aim of providing better continuity of care on the patient side along with better use of hospital resources. The research project is funded by The Danish Strategic Research Council.

The position is within the sub-area: “Productivity measurement” with the objectives: To develop and test methods to measure productivity as well as economies of scale and scope, where professional quality is an integral part of the methodology.

Please refer to http://sdu.dk/en/Om_SDU/Institutter_centre/cCohere for the full project description.

The successful applicant for a PhD Scholarship must have demonstrated a research potential as reflected e.g. by the grades obtained.

Institutional knowledge concerning the Danish hospital sector is not a requirement from the outset, but is considered a prerequisite for a successful project.

The research project ‘The Hospital of the Future’ has a firm foundation within the area of the Social Sciences, but the development and testing of models reaches well into the clinical world. Thus, successful applicants are expected to have an educational background in economics or business economics - e.g. cand.oecon., cand.scient.oecon., or cand.merc. - applicants with a related educational background may however come into consideration as well. The application must include a synopsis describing a set of ideas related to one or more of the three pillars for the overall project to be addressed as part of the scholarship along with the methods to be used for doing this. The proposal may be further specified during the first three months of the position.

The PhD Scholarship can either be accomplished in terms of the so-called 5+3 model or the 4+4 model. Scholarships according to the 5+3 model can be given to applicants with a master degree and have a duration of 3 years. Scholarships according to the 4+4 model can be given to applicants, who have passed the 4th year of their master studies, and have a duration of 4 years. For the first two years you will be enrolled in the PhD programme and the Master’s programme parallel to each other. During that period your pay will consist of a combination of SU student grants and salary for job assignments. After obtaining the Master’s Degree, you will enter into a salaried PhD scholarship. Pay and conditions of employment will be in accordance with the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and AC (the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations).

As part of the PhD program the PhD student must complete an individual planned course program.
The PhD student must also achieve teaching experience during the research education. The PhD student is expected to spend a certain period with a relevant foreign research institution, normally one semester. The research unit for health economics appoints a supervisor and possibly a co-supervisor.

PhD students are expected to participate actively in the activities at the department, and to spend a significant portion of time there.
