Title: Staraja Rjazan - The history of the centre of princedom Rjazan until the Mongolians invasion 1237 based on archaeological sources

Abstract: The archaeological site of Staraya Ryazan, the former capital of the Grand Principality of Ryazan, belongs to one of the most investigated cities of Medieval Rus'. Founded in the early 11th century, it existed almost 200 years before it was destroyed by the Mongols in 1237 as one of the first capitals of the Kievan Rus. Staraya Ryazan is situated 260 kilometres to the southeast of Moscow on the high right bank of the Oka River. The only objects preserved above ground are the 2 kilometer long remains of a rampart with a ditch. Originally the entire rampart surrounded an area of 65 hectares. The ensemble of Staraya Ryazan is divided into three parts. The first part is represented by the northern peak, where a small settlement founded by Finno-Ugrian tribes existed until the 8th century, when they left this territory. In the early 11th century the colonists invading from Southern Rus' and the East-Slavic tribe of the Krivichi built a fortified settlement, the so called northern hillfort, as an outpost against the steppe nomads as well as a safeguard point for the Oka valley. In the mid 12th century the sons of Yaroslav Svyatoslavich divided the principality of Murom-Ryazan and Staraya Ryazan became the capital of its own Grand Principality. In its course the territory of the city was enlarged and the ramparts of the southern hillfort were built. Thus began a second wave when settlers and skilled workmen as well as traders and clericals came to Staraya Ryazan. All administrative centres moved to the southern hillfort. This arrangement existed until the invasion of the Mongols in 1237.
In the fortified settlement there are practically no houses. Accordingly archaeological investigations are very auspicious. The northern hillfort is a stratified site. Almost all chronological periods of the city can be investigated there. The cultural layers can be associated with the phases of the fortifications. On the other side, the southern hillfort has no stratigraphy. But there can be found a lot of rich artefacts which are related with the prime of the city, when it was the capital. It appears that Staraya Ryazan as a medieval Russian capital city started and developed in an atypical way. The city was founded in a territory without any population. Therefore Staraya Ryazan has no roots in the tribal structures of the period before the establishment of the Kievan state. The city is one of the youngest capitals of all Russian principalities but it was the first to lose its political, economic and cultural importance after the invasion by the Mongols in 1237. Recent investigations have concentrated on the stratigraphy, structure and arrangement of the city. Furthermore the former inhabitants, the social status, and the political connections remain to be characterized by future archaeological investigations. Even though until now only six percent of the fortified settlement has been investigated, contemporary techniques in archaeological research here promise new insights into the life of capital cities of medieval Rus'.

Abstract: Following their conversion to Christianity in the 10th century the city Constantinople gained new religious significance for the Rus. While appearing in some earlier works, Constantinople figures prominently in several works written by Russian travelers and pilgrims between the early 13th and mid-15th centuries, that is, the period just before the sack of Constantinople in the Fourth Crusade in 1204 and its conquest by the Ottoman Turks in 1453. In addition to the insight that these works provide into medieval Russian religious belief and pilgrimage practice, the accounts left by Russian travelers and pilgrims to Constantinople also form a valuable historical source on several levels: they describe the destruction wrought on the city by the Latins in their sack of the city and subsequent rule, they provide data on the condition of the city once Byzantine rule had been re-established, and they can provide confirmation for the dating of various natural disasters and political events.

Abstract: PURPOSE: The purpose of this work is to study the skeleton maturation in the black population of Benin by means of Tanner Whitehouse method (TW2) in comparison with the populations of the developed countries.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study was transversal and analytic. It included 297 boys and 303 girls aged from 9 to 18 years. This was conducted from October 2002 to May 2003 in Cotonou City, the economic capital of Benin. The corrected minimum size of the sample was 384 x 1.19. The sampling technique was chancy, multiphasic, stratified and in clusters. Every one of the 13 districts of Cotonou was considered as a stratum. The interpreter of the anteroposterior radiograph of the left wrist and hand was selected after an intra and extra observer test. The data treatment and analysis were performed by the logiciels Epi info and SPSS. The statistical tests used were Khi 2 test and Kappa index.
RESULTS: The sample was mainly composed of pupils: 84.16% among the boys, 77.23% among the girls. 91.01% of the parents of the children had a middle standard of living. The skeleton maturation score increased with age in all TW2 methods. With the TW2 20 bone and RUS methods, the mature score was reached at percentile 50 among the boys at 18.5 years and among the girls at 17 years. It was precociously reached at percentile 97 respectively at 14 and 14.3 years among the boys and 12.7 years among the girls. With the Carpal bone method, the age of mature score at percentile 50 was 18.2years among the boys and 17.2 years among the girls. The early maturation was obtained at percentile 97 among the boys and the girls respectively at 13.2 and 12.5 years.
DISCUSSION: The skeleton maturation score of the girls in Benin is I to 1.5 years higher than the one of the boys. With the TW2 bone and the RUS methods, the maturation shows a delay of 0.5 to 2.5 years at the percentile 50 and of 1.5 to 2 years at the percentile 97 in relation to the Belgian, British, Chinese, Korean, Japanese, and North American standards. These delays seem to be mainly due to the less favourable socioeconomic conditions in Benin. In the other hand, the more considerable delay of 1 to 4 years with the Carpal bone method remains to be elucidated.
CONCLUSION: The osseous age stemming from this work is representative of the middle social stratums of the city backgrounds. It would gain to be completed by a similar work concerning the country backgrounds of Benin.

Title: RUS skeletal maturity of children in Beijing.

Volume: 32

DOI: 10.1080/03014460500087725
Published: 2005 May-Jun
Abstract: BACKGROUND: RUS (radius-ulna-short bones) maturity of children has been estimated in two provinces in China, but not in the capital. In order to obtain a clearer picture of skeletal maturity in China, it is indispensable to include children from Beijing in the study.
AIM: The aims of this study were three-fold: (1) to establish RUS skeletal maturity of children in Beijing, (2) to compare RUS skeletal maturity in Beijing with the Tanner-Whitehouse 3 (TW3) standard and the Tokyo standard, and (3) to examine regional variation in skeletal maturity in China.
METHODS: Hand and wrist radiographs of 631 boys and 642 girls, aged 6-18, were obtained in Beijing in 1997, and their RUS skeletal maturity was estimated using the TW3 method.
RESULTS: RUS maturity of the Beijing children was very similar to the TW3 standard until the age of 10 years in the girls, and the age of 12 years in the boys. The girls attained full maturity at 15 years of age, matching the TW3 and Tokyo standards, while the boys reached full maturity at the age of 16 years, as in Tokyo boys, but 1 year earlier than the TW3 standards. Beijing children showed progressively more rapid bone maturation than the Harbin and Changsha children, and attained full maturation 1 year earlier, in both girls and boys.
CONCLUSION: The RUS maturity of the Beijing children was comparable with that of Tokyo children, except for the boys between 11 and 13 years. Variability of the RUS maturation among the Chinese children was greater than that found among the TW3, Tokyo and Beijing children.
