Category Names

Title: Study of the medieval dogs from novgorod, Russia (X-XIV century) Author(s): Zinoviev, AV (Zinoviev, A. V.) Source: INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF OSTEOARCHAEOLOGY Volume: 22 Issue: 2 Pages: 145-157 DOI: 10.1002/oa.1191 Published: MAR-APR 2012 Abstract: The aim of this study was to investigate the diversity of dogs in medieval Novgorod. Based on the unique osteological collection of canine bones from layers of 10th to 14th centuries AD, research showed that the classical medium-sized mesocephalic animals were the most widespread in the city in the discussed times. Well suitable for the alarm guarding, they were rarely used for food or skins. Smaller and larger specimens are rare and most likely represent the luxury breeds of upper classes or prosperous citizens. Copyright (c) 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. The only preserved distal part of the right mandibular branch shows a rotated transitional permanent extra premolar between P(3) and P(4). This abnormality has the potential to serve as a territorially-based indicator of past wild boar populations. Copyright (C) 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. S.); Poselyugina, OB (Poselyugina, O. B.) Source: TERAPEVTICHESKII ARKHIV Volume: 82 Issue: 9 Pages: 38-40 Published: 2010 Abstract: Aim. To estimate a possible relationship of neurotic personality disorders to increased dietary salt intake. Subjects and methods. Two hundred and thirty patients with essential hypertension were examined. Salt taste sensitivity threshold and daily urinary sodium excretion were determined; the psychological status of the patients was rated by the Mini-Mental State Examination questionnaire; their attitude towards to disease was assessed by the Bekhterev Institute personality questionnaire, the severity of depression was evaluated by the Beck depression inventory. Results. The hypertensive patients consuming excessive amounts of salt have been ascertained to complain of cardiovascular and neurotic disorders more frequently; their disease is accompanied by frequently evolving hypertensive crises. Anxiety and tension are prevalent in their psychological status. Almost 50% of the patients have depression. A harmonious disease attitude is seen in only a third of cases whereas the neurasthenic and anxious types play a dominant role. Conclusion. The patients taking higher salt amounts are observed to seek medical advice on the one hand and to show a predominance of neurasthenic and anxious disease attitudes with a tendency towards incompliance on the other. The findings show it necessary to notify hypertensive patients during their examination and management. Source: CAHIERS DU MONDE RUSSE Volume: 50 Issue: 2-3 Pages: 315-+ Published: APR-SEP 2009 Abstract: Cadastral books as a historical source: a new way of using the geographical information they provide. The article introduces an unconventional method for analyzing geographical data applicable to the study of historical sources containing systematically recurring place names. Establishing the geographical location of these toponyms not only allows the researcher to connect different elements of the text under study, but also to reveal spatial relationships which shed light on the composition and structure of the document under study. Geographical information is all the more precious as subsequent content changes have no effect on it. The author demonstrates his point with four cases drawn from his and N.V. Piotukh's research on late fifteenth- and early sixteenth-century cadastral books of the Dereva piatina on the Novgorod land. We have shown that mixed kappa-agonist mu-antagonist nalbuphine (0.25 mpk im b.i.d.) was effective in reducing opiate consumption in 29 patients with a broad range of ages (29.4 +/- 6.4 years) and with a long history of substance abuse (9.3 +/- 3.6 years). Administration of nalbuphine for at least 14 days, up to at most 6 months, on an outpatient basis, led to a dramatic fall in the consumption of heroin and other totally illicit substances, along with a decline in criminal behaviour, as well as a higher level of retention of patients in the study, but also to improvements in patients' quality of life. Nalbuphine was safe, effective and highly compatible with the traditional therapy used to combat opiate addiction in Russia. Nalbuphine can also be used to stabilize HIV-positive patients. The study showed that both the Current Russian medical infrastructure and medical professionals themselves could successfully contribute to the long-term agonist-antagonist treatment of patients with opiate addiction. We believe that our study warrants the further investigation of nalbuphine in treating opiate addiction.
